Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,289 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 months.
Defect
The routing of the engine compartment wiring harness is incorrect, allowing the harness to contact a sharp edge on the side frame and sustain insulation damage. Continued use in this condition can cause the wiring to short-circuit, blowing fuses and resulting in a no-start condition, incorrect speedometer readings, or inoperative reverse lamps. In the worst case, a short circuit in certain wiring may cause a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, install an edge protector on the side frame and fit a rigid protective tube and heat-resistant sheath over the engine compartment wiring. Inspect the engine compartment wiring; repair any damaged sections where repair is possible, and replace with new wiring where repair is not possible.
