Filing in context
The Seat Belt is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 55 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 36 Mitsubishi notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 2,309 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 3 months.
Defect
The spindle of the retractor in the two-point seat belt fitted to the second-row rotating bench seat is improperly shaped, causing the belt lock mechanism to fail to engage on some units. In a collision or similar impact, the belt may be unable to restrain the occupant or a child seat. Additionally, if the belt is forcibly extended during child seat installation, internal components may break, preventing the belt from retracting.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the affected seat belt assembly with a conforming part.
