Filing in context
The Body is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 108 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 1,894 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 9 months.
Issue
The tailgate stopper bracket on the tailgate side was formed using an improper process, resulting in localized reduction in plate thickness and insufficient strength. Vibration during driving and repeated tailgate open/close cycles load the thinned area of the bracket, causing a crack to develop there. In the worst case, the bracket may fracture, the stopper may detach, and the tailgate may drop suddenly.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the tailgate stopper assembly with the corrected part. Prior to performing the replacement, notify all owners of the defect and advise them of precautions to observe when operating the tailgate.
