Filing in context
The Differential is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 33 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 1,673 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 2 months.
Defect
The dynamic damper fitted to the rear axle differential to reduce vibration has insufficient strength in both the weight support rubber and the pin that prevents the weight from detaching. Continued use causes the weight support rubber to break and the pin to subsequently fracture. In the worst case, the weight detaches from the vehicle and endangers other traffic. (Note: This notification supersedes the corrective action filed on August 22, 2000, as Notification No. 164, which was determined to be insufficient, and implements a revised corrective action.)
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the dynamic damper with the corrected part.
