Filing in context
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 350 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years.
Defect
The advance control lever of the cold-start advance device has insufficient impact resistance due to inadequate strength margins in its design. During fuel injection pump timing adjustment service, an accidental impact to the lever may cause a crack to develop. Continued use in this condition can cause the lever to fracture, increasing the fuel injection volume and causing engine speed to rise uncontrollably.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the advance control lever with a corrected part.
