Defect

In the power transfer system of four-wheel-drive vehicles, the press-fit tool used to install the rear axle differential seal is incorrect, causing the seal to be damaged during installation. Continued use allows oil to leak at high speed. In the worst case, the rear axle differential is damaged and the vehicle becomes inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, inspect the oil level in the rear axle differential. If the oil level meets the required minimum, replace the seal with a conforming part. If the oil level is below the required minimum, replace the rear axle differential assembly with a conforming unit.
