Filing in context
The Differential is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 33 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,238 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 years and 1 month.
Defect
On rear two-axle drive vehicles, two separate deficiencies exist in the front drive axle differential (inter-differential case): (1) Instructions issued under a prior recall were inadequate, leaving wear on the spline joint between the inter-differential case and the propeller shaft coupling. This wear allows the castle nut to loosen. (2) The thread strength at the coupling mounting is insufficient. When the propeller shaft installation angle is large and input loads on the threads are high, the threads may fracture. Continued operation under either condition can cause the coupling to separate from the inter-differential case and, in the worst case, result in propeller shaft detachment and loss of mobility. (Note: This recall supersedes the recall filed July 26, 2000, under Notification No. 649. The corrective instructions issued under that recall were inadequate; this filing revises those instructions and expands the corrective action and affected population.)
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the inter-differential case with a corrected part. Because corrected parts require time to procure, an interim measure applies in the meantime: inspect the inter-differential case installation condition. Replace any unit found to be abnormal with a corrected part immediately. Units found to be normal will receive the corrected part at a later date.
Affected models & chassis ranges
This filing lists 7 type code(s). A vehicle is affected if its chassis number falls within one of the ranges below.
