Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Power Transfer / Drivetrain as the affected component. This filing is one of 36 Mitsubishi notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 2,656 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 6 months.
Defect
The automatic transmission mount uses rubber with insufficient heat resistance. Prolonged idling causes the rubber to degrade from heat and fracture. Continued use after fracture allows the automatic transmission control lever to contact the battery tray bracket, preventing a shift into Park and leaving the ignition key unable to be removed.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the automatic transmission mount assembly with the corrected part. Because this change alone increases vibration levels, also replace the engine mount with the corrected part.
