Filing in context
The Fuel Tank is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 79 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 2,665 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 6 months.
Defect
Fuel tanks manufactured beyond the specified design dimensions were installed, resulting in the clearance between the top of the fuel tank and the body being larger than the specified value. This excessive clearance allows pressure changes inside the tank to cause abnormal deformation. Continued operation can produce cracks in the upper portion of the fuel tank. In the worst case, filling the tank to capacity causes fuel to leak.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the fuel tank with a corrected part and adjust the clearance between the tank and the body floor to within the specified value.
