Filing in context
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 36 Mitsubishi notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 1,312 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 8 months.
Defect
In the engine, the adhesive securing the vibration-damping rubber of the crankshaft pulley that drives the accessory belt has insufficient heat resistance. At elevated temperatures during high-speed driving, the adhesive bond weakens, causing the pulley to separate from the vibration-damping rubber. This damages the adjacent crank angle sensor or sensing blade, leading to improper engine control. In the worst case, the engine may stall and be unable to restart, or engine speed may increase unintentionally.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the crankshaft pulley with a corrected part that uses an improved heat-resistant adhesive.
