Filing in context
The Fuel Tank is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 79 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 34 Mitsubishi notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 4,007 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 7 months.
Defect
These are wheelchair-accessible vehicles converted from standard production vehicles by lowering the rear floor and modifying the suspension. In the fuel system, the rear floor has insufficient rigidity. When the floor is lowered, forces acting on the stopper deform the floor and impose excessive stress on the fuel tank mounting points secured to that floor. Repeated floor lowering and raising operations may cause a crack to develop in the fuel tank. In the worst case, fuel may leak.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, perform the following: (1) Add reinforcing members to the stopper mounting section of the floor, replace the rear fuel tank mounting bracket with a revised corrected/revised part, and replace the fuel tank with a new unit.
