Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Pressure Control / Brake Line as the affected component. This filing is one of 34 Mitsubishi notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 49 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 11 months.
Defect
The battery is mounted in an improper position, allowing rainwater to reach the top of the battery and enter through the vent plug breathing holes, increasing electrolyte volume. Overflowing electrolyte may contact the left front wheel brake pipe, corroding the pipe, causing brake fluid to leak, and reducing braking force. As an interim measure, all owners will be notified of the defect and advised of the associated risks.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, install a rainwater ingress prevention cover on the battery and replace the battery seat with an improved unit equipped with a drain hose. Inspect the brake pipes and replace any pipe showing rust with a new part.
