Filing in context
The Fuse is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 16 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 34 Mitsubishi notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 2,760 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 13 years and 11 months.
Defect
The fusible link installed between the battery relay and the starter switch has an insufficient capacity rating and an improperly designed terminal mounting section. Under sustained high-load current flow, the terminal mounting section may overheat and melt the fusible link even in the absence of a short circuit. Interruption of the main power circuit causes lights and other electrical accessories to stop functioning, the engine to stall, and the vehicle to be unable to restart.
Corrective action
Replace the fusible link with a higher-capacity blade-type fuse.
