Filing in context
The Propeller shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 17 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 24 Mitsubishi notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 2,359 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 1 month.
Defect
The weight balance of the propeller shaft is improper on some vehicles. Continued use causes the rear end of the propeller shaft to bend during driving, allowing it to disengage from the spline and rendering the vehicle inoperable. In the worst case, the fuel tank may also be damaged.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the propeller shaft with a corrected part.
