Filing in context
The Propeller shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 17 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,426 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 years and 3 months.
Defect
On large buses equipped with a hydraulic retarder (auxiliary braking device), the propeller shaft connection structure at the end yoke is inadequate. The bearing retaining stopper for the universal joint spider fitted to the end yoke wears through repeated vehicle starts and stops, or may be damaged during propeller shaft assembly. Continued use allows play to develop in the bearing, causing excessive propeller shaft vibration. In the worst case, the bearing retaining bracket or mounting bolts fracture and the propeller shaft detaches from the vehicle.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the end yoke and spider assembly with corrected parts. Because full supply of corrected parts requires time, as an interim measure, inspect the affected bearing for play. Vehicles exceeding the maintenance tolerance are to receive corrected parts immediately; vehicles within tolerance are to receive corrected parts at a later date.
