Issue
During manufacturing of the tailgate gas-filled springs, improper temperature control during the chrome plating process caused micro-cracks to form in the plated surface of the rod. Continued use allows the pressurized gas to leak through these micro-cracks, reducing the spring's counter-force. In the worst case, the tailgate can no longer be held in the open position.
Corrective action
On all affected vehicles, the lot number of the gas spring is verified. Units identified as affected are replaced with conforming parts.
