Filing in context
The Body is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 108 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 27 Mitsubishi notifications from 2019 in this archive. For scale, 2,521 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 2 months.
Issue
On large tour buses, the tightening torque specification for the ball studs on the trunk and engine lid dampers was incorrect, causing some ball studs to be overtorqued during assembly. Repeated opening and closing of the lids loosens the ball studs, allowing the dampers to detach. In the worst case, the lid can no longer be held fully open and may fall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, remove the lid damper ball studs, apply thread-locking compound to the threaded portion, and retighten to the correct torque. If correct torque cannot be achieved upon reinstallation, replace the component into which the ball stud is installed with a new part.
