Filing in context
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 18 Honda notifications from 2023 in this archive. For scale, 1,911 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 months.
Defect
An improper manufacturing process of the right-side crankcase cover allows paint to adhere to the press-fit area of the sealing plug. Engine heat reduces the plug's retention force over time, eventually causing the plug to eject and engine oil to spray out. In the worst case, sprayed oil contacting the rider may cause burns; oil contacting high-temperature components such as the exhaust pipe may cause a vehicle fire; and oil contacting the rear tire may cause the vehicle to fall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the right-side crankcase cover with a corrected part. Because parts require time to prepare, owners will be notified of the defect and advised to take precautions; replacement will be performed once parts are available.
