Filing in context

The Suspension arm/rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 20 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 31 Mitsubishi notifications from 2010 in this archive. For scale, 2,755 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 6 months.

Defect

On the front suspension upper arm, improper positioning control during welding of the two sheet metal plates may have caused the ball joint mounting hole locations to be misaligned. This misalignment causes the mounting bolts to gall during installation, resulting in insufficient clamping force. In service, the bolts may loosen, allowing the ball joint to separate and rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, inspect the upper arm ball joint mounting condition. If any bolt is found missing, loose, or seized, or if deformation of the bolt mounting holes in the upper arm is observed, replace the upper arm assembly with a corrected part. If none of these conditions are found, retighten the bolts to the specified torque.
