Filing in context

The Suspension arm/rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 20 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 1,613 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 11 years and 8 months.

Defect

The front suspension arms and, on rear tandem-axle vehicles, the rearmost axle suspension arms have insufficient rigidity. Road-load inputs during driving and braking forces cause cracks to develop in the reinforcement members of the affected arms, or wear to develop on the knuckle shafts. Continued use in this condition may cause the arm reinforcement to fracture or the knuckle shaft to break. In the worst case, the vehicle may become inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the suspension arms with corrected parts and replace the knuckle shafts with new parts. Because full parts availability will take time, vehicles must be inspected in the interim. Any vehicle with abnormal components must be repaired immediately; vehicles with no abnormality detected will have the replacement performed at a later date once parts are available.
