Overview

Defect

① On light trucks with front independent suspension, the dust boot seal design on the upper arm and lower arm ball joints is inadequate, allowing mud and water to enter the joints. This causes wear of the resin bearings, producing play. ② On the same type of light trucks, the supply method for upper arm ball joint service parts is inadequate, resulting in some units being incorrectly assembled during maintenance. Mud and water enter these improperly assembled joints, causing resin bearing wear and play. In both cases, continued use increases the play and, in the worst case, may cause the ball joint to separate from the suspension arm, rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

① On all affected vehicles, replace the lower arm ball joint with the corrected part; for the upper arm, either replace the ball joint with the corrected part or replace the complete upper arm assembly with the corrected part. ② On all affected vehicles, replace the complete upper arm assembly with a new part. Because full parts supply will take time, an interim measure requires inspection of each joint; joints showing play or boot damage are to be replaced with corrected parts immediately, while joints showing no defect are to be replaced with corrected parts at a later date. Additionally, enhanced inspection and maintenance procedures for this area will be communicated to raise user awareness during periodic inspections.
