Filing in context
The Continuously Variable Transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Honda notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 3,159 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 months.
Defect
The press-cutting process used to separate the metal belt elements of the belt-type continuously variable transmission (CVT) was improperly performed, causing deformation of the element body on some units. Under driving loads, stress concentrates at the base of the affected elements and may cause cracking. In the worst case, an element fractures, and the fragment becomes wedged between the metal belt and pulley, causing the metal belt to break and rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
All vehicles: replace the continuously variable transmission with a conforming unit.
