Filing in context
The Continuously Variable Transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 25 Honda notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 1,190 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 months.
Defect
The control software for the continuously variable transmission (CVT) is incorrectly programmed. When the shift lever is moved to a forward or reverse position and the accelerator is applied rapidly, slippage occurs between the CVT drive pulley and the metal belt, causing the belt elements to overheat excessively. Continued operation may damage the elements, fracture the metal belt, and render the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the CVT electronic control unit with the corrected software.
