Defect

The metal belt elements of the continuously variable transmission were improperly stamped during the manufacturing process. This concentrates driving loads at the base of each element, causing cracks to form and the element to fracture. Fracture debris becomes trapped between the metal belt and the pulley, causing the metal belt itself to fracture and rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the continuously variable transmission with a corrected unit.
