Filing in context

The Continuously Variable Transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 17 Honda notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 3,403 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.

Defect

The metal belt elements of the continuously variable transmission were improperly stamped during the manufacturing process. This concentrates driving loads at the base of each element, causing cracks to form and the element to fracture. Fracture debris becomes trapped between the metal belt and the pulley, causing the metal belt itself to fracture and rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the continuously variable transmission with a corrected unit.
