Filing in context
The Continuously Variable Transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Honda notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 2,018 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 months.
Defect
In the belt-type continuously variable transmission (CVT), improper separation of the metal belt elements during the manufacturing process has deformed the body of some elements. Under driving loads, stress concentrates at the base of the affected element and causes a crack. In the worst case, the element fractures, the fragment becomes trapped between the metal belt and pulley, and the metal belt breaks, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the continuously variable transmission with a conforming unit.
