Filing in context
The Continuously Variable Transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Honda notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 471 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years.
Defect
The control unit software for the continuously variable transmission (CVT) is incorrect, causing the CVT oil pump to generate excessive hydraulic pressure at low engine speeds. This causes the pump vane sliding surfaces to wear prematurely. Continued use leads to abnormal vane wear, preventing the system from maintaining adequate hydraulic pressure. In the worst case, the oil pump may fail and the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the CVT control unit with corrected software and replace the transmission oil with a high wear-resistance grade. Additionally, inspect the CVT hydraulic control sensor output value; if it falls outside the specified range, replace the CVT with a new unit.
