Filing in context
The Seat Belt is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 55 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 46 Toyota notifications from 2023 in this archive. For scale, 987 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 9 months.
Defect
The retention structure of the rear left seat belt buckle is improperly designed, allowing the buckle to fall into the seat interior and preventing seat reclining. If the recliner is operated in that condition, the buckle is damaged and the seat belt can no longer lock correctly. In the worst case, the belt may release during vehicle operation.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, confirm the chassis number. On applicable vehicles, inspect the retention band at the buckle mounting point and, where required, replace the band with a corrected part and replace the buckle with a new unit.
