Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 4 manufacturers: Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan & Suzuki.
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Heater Unit (Manual Air Conditioning) as the affected component. This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2022 in this archive. For scale, 1,669 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 months.
Defect
The manual air conditioning heater unit uses an improperly designed airflow outlet switching mechanism. Rapidly operating the outlet selector dial under high-temperature conditions can cause internal components to disengage, rendering the dial inoperable. As a result, the defroster becomes unavailable and the driver may be unable to maintain a clear view through the windshield.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, a bracket is added to the heater unit to prevent internal components from disengaging. The airflow outlet switching cable is also inspected; any cable found to be bent is replaced with a new part.
