Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2022 in this archive. For scale, 668 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 5 months.
Defect
In the continuously variable transmission (CVT), an incorrect control program in the CVT controller may cause the steel belt to slip and generate wear debris during high-load kickdown operation. Continued use allows the wear debris to cause sticking in the hydraulic pressure control valve, resulting in insufficient hydraulic pressure. In the worst case, the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
Inspect the CVT on all vehicles; if belt slippage is determined to have occurred, replace the CVT. Reprogram the CVT controller with the corrected/updated software on all vehicles. If the CVT was not replaced at the time of the recall and belt slippage is subsequently confirmed, the CVT will be replaced at no charge.
