Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Fuel Hose / Pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 62 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Mazda notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 37 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 4 months.
Defect
On plastic fuel tanks, the fuel evaporative gas hose material and the surface finish of the pressure relief valve are incorrect, causing the pressure relief valve to stick on some units. Continued operation allows the fuel tank to develop negative pressure and deform, tilting the fuel level gauge. As a result, the fuel gauge reads higher than the actual fuel level, the low-fuel warning light does not illuminate, and the engine may stall due to unexpected fuel exhaustion.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the fuel evaporative gas hose and ventilation line with corrected parts.
