Defect
On large dump trucks, the stainless steel hinges mounted on the upper rear posts were welded over an insufficient area during manufacturing, leaving the hinge components with insufficient strength. Vibration and stress during opening and closing operations cause cracks to develop at the weld. In the worst case, the weld fractures, causing the hinge components and upper frame components to detach and fall, creating a risk of injury.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, perform additional welding on the affected hinge components to bring the weld area to the correct specification.
