Defect

During assembly of the front and inter-axle propeller shaft universal joints, the axial play adjustment process was performed improperly, leaving some joints with axial play that exceeds the allowable limit. Continued use in this condition allows grease to leak out and allows mud and water to enter the bearing cup. The resulting lack of lubrication causes bearing seizure and universal joint damage. In the worst case, the propeller shaft may detach from the vehicle, rendering it inoperable.

Corrective action

Measure the axial play at the universal joint on all vehicles and replace any joint that exceeds the allowable limit with a conforming part. Because conforming parts require lead time to prepare, the following interim measures apply: Where grease cannot be supplied to the universal joint, replace immediately with a conforming part. Where play is 0.3 mm or greater, replace the propeller shaft with a conforming part. Where play exceeds 0.1 mm but is less than 0.3 mm, replenish grease at every 5,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first, and replace with a conforming part as soon as one is available. The allowable play limit of 0.1 mm or less will be reconfirmed for reliability before transitioning to a permanent corrective measure.

状況

フロント及びインターアクスルプロペラシャフトにおいて、ユニバーサルジョイント組付け時の軸方向ガタ調整工程が不適切なため、当該ジョイント部の軸方向のガタが許容値を超えているものがある。そのため、そのままの状態で使用を続けると、グリースが漏れ出し泥水等がベアリングカップ内に浸入して、グリースの劣化による潤滑不足でベアリングが焼き付き、ユニバーサルジョイント部が破損し、最悪の場合、プロペラシャフトが脱落して走行不能となるおそれがある。

改善措置

全車両、ユニバーサルジョイント部のガタ量を計測し、許容値を超えるものは、良品に交換する。但し、良品の準備に時間を要するため、以下の暫定措置を行う。  ユニバーサルジョイント部にグリースが給脂できない場合は、良品に交換する。  ガタ量が0.3mm以上の場合は、当該プロペラシャフトを良品に交換する。  ガタ量が0.1mmを超え0.3mm未満の場合は、グリースを5,000km又は6か月毎のいずれか   早く到達した時点で給脂を行い、準備ができ次第、良品に交換する。  なお、当該ジョイント部のガタ量の許容値 (0.1mm以下) については、市場措置での確実な改善を期すため、その信頼性を改めて確認したうえで恒久措置に切り換える。
