Filing in context
The Headlamp is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 32 Toyota notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 3,495 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 8 months.
Defect
When headlamps are used in taxi applications or other conditions requiring extended continuous illumination beyond the anticipated duration, heat and ultraviolet radiation from the bulb may cause the aluminum vapor deposition on the reflector to peel. Continued operation with a degraded reflector reduces light concentration, causing luminous intensity to gradually decrease and, in the worst case, fail to meet Safety Standards Article 32 (headlamp requirements).
Corrective action
Replace the headlamp reflector with a corrected/revised part and replace the lens with a new unit on all vehicles.
