Filing in context

The Headlamp is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 36 Toyota notifications from 2019 in this archive. For scale, 3,245 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 8 months.

Defect

In headlamp applications such as taxis, prolonged continuous illumination beyond the anticipated duration allows heat and ultraviolet radiation from the bulb to cause detachment of the aluminum vapor deposition coating on the reflector. Continued use after detachment results in insufficient light concentration and a gradual reduction in luminous intensity. In the worst case, the headlamp may no longer meet the requirements of Safety Standards Article 32 (headlamp standards).

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the headlamp reflector with a corrected part and replace the lens with a new unit.
