Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 3 manufacturers: Daihatsu, Subaru & Toyota.
The Steering is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 5 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 7 Daihatsu notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 781 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 months.
Defect
The steering wheel was improperly attached to the steering column during assembly. Steering inputs while driving may cause the mounting nut to loosen, producing play at the spline fitting. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the play increases. In the worst case, the fitting may disengage completely, resulting in loss of steering control.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the steering wheel mounting condition will be inspected and the mounting nut tightened to the specified torque. Where abnormal mounting conditions are found, the steering wheel will be correctly reinstalled.
