Overview

Defect

On the engines of large trucks and buses, owners and automotive service providers were not informed of the need to periodically clean the fuel injection system. Without this cleaning, temperature fluctuations in the fuel can cause compounds to form within the fuel, causing the valves inside the fuel injection system to stick. This prevents proper fuel injection, leading to hard starting, white smoke emissions, and illumination of the engine control system warning lamp. In the worst case, fuel accumulated in the exhaust pipe may ignite, resulting in a vehicle fire.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, inspect the condition of the fuel injection system and, if signs of malfunction are found, replace the fuel injection system with new parts. In addition, inject cleaning agent into the fuel tank to remove compound deposits from inside the fuel injection system. The maintenance record will be updated to include periodic fuel injection system cleaning using the cleaning agent, and owners and automotive service providers will be notified of the importance of this periodic cleaning. Because preparation of the fuel injection system cleaning agent requires time, large buses whose exhaust pipe outlet is in close proximity to a plastic bumper will be prioritized for remedy.
