Filing in context
The Fuel Injection System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 23 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 27 Mazda notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 684 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years.
Defect
In the diesel engine, the injector mounting nuts are insufficiently torqued, which may reduce the contact pressure on the injector gasket. Combustion gas can then blow past the gasket into the cylinder head, carbonizing the engine oil. The carbonized oil clogs the oil strainer, causing oil pressure to drop and the warning light to illuminate. Continued operation leads to engine seizure and, in the worst case, engine stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, retorque the injector mounting nuts. Additionally, inspect oil pressure; if an abnormality is found, flush the engine interior and replace the oil strainer and engine oil.
