Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Nissan.
The Other (Body Structure) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 6 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 27 Mazda notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 115 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 years.
Defect
On the gas-charged damper stays of the rear gate, the paint applied to the outer tube's end cap is improper, allowing corrosion to develop under the influence of salt air in salt-damage areas. Continued use allows the corrosion to progress, causing the outer tube to swell and the end cap to crack. When the rear gate is opened, the outer tube may burst and, in the worst case, injure bystanders.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the damper stay with a corrected part. Because replacement parts require time to prepare, older model years will be prioritized for replacement. For vehicles produced in 2010 or earlier, inspect the damper stay; if a crack is found in the end cap, disable use of the rear gate as an interim measure.
