Filing in context
The Fuel pump is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 37 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 21 Mazda notifications from 2021 in this archive. For scale, 824 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 4 months.
Defect
The impeller (plastic vane wheel) of the low-pressure fuel pump on gasoline-fueled vehicles was molded under incorrect conditions, resulting in insufficient resin density. The low-density impeller absorbs fuel and swells, causing deformation. The deformed impeller contacts the pump case, causing the low-pressure fuel pump to malfunction and, in the worst case, resulting in an engine stall while driving.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump is replaced with a corrected part. Because repair parts require time to procure, owners will be notified separately to schedule service once parts are available.
