Filing in context
The Turbocharger is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 30 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 56 Mitsubishi notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 1,677 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 6 months.
Defect
The linkage that drives the variable nozzle vanes in the turbocharger has insufficient corrosion resistance, allowing rust to develop and the linkage to seize. When this occurs, the engine ECU detects abnormal boost pressure, illuminates the engine warning light, and activates a fail-safe mode with reduced power output. Exhaust gas emissions may also exceed the regulatory limit.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the turnbuckle in the variable nozzle vane drive linkage of the turbocharger with a corrected part, and reprogram the engine ECU with the corrected software.
