Filing in context
The Airbag is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 225 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Mitsubishi notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 697 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 11 months.
Defect
The passenger-side airbag inflator contains a propellant charge with inadequate moisture protection. Repeated cycles of temperature and humidity cause the propellant to degrade. As a result, the inflator housing may rupture during airbag deployment.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the airbag inflator or airbag module with a corrected part. Because replacement parts require additional lead time, if parts are unavailable, as an interim measure, disable the passenger-side airbag function and display a warning on the passenger sun visor indicating that the airbag is inactive.
