Filing in context
The Airbag is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 225 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 47 Mitsubishi notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 466 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 4 months.
Defect
In the passenger-side airbag inflator, inadequate moisture protection of the propellant allows the propellant to degrade through repeated temperature and humidity cycles. During airbag deployment, this degradation may cause the inflator canister to rupture.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the airbag inflator or airbag module with a corrected part. Because replacement parts require time to procure, if parts are unavailable, an interim measure will be applied: the passenger-side airbag will be deactivated and a warning label indicating that the airbag is non-operational will be affixed to the passenger-side sun visor.
