Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 3 manufacturers: Mitsubishi, Nissan & Suzuki.
The Other (Electrical Equipment) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Mitsubishi notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 151 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 7 months.
Defect
On the circuit board of the power distribution unit, excess solder residue present during manufacturing was sealed over by moisture-resistant coating on some units. Over time, the coating may develop a crack. In high-humidity conditions, this allows minute electrical conduction between electrodes, causing electrode material migration and the formation of a short circuit. The heat generated by the resulting short circuit current may, in the worst case, cause a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the affected power distribution unit with a conforming replacement unit.
