Filing in context
The Exhaust Pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 54 Isuzu notifications from 2012 in this archive. For scale, 2,160 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 11 years and 5 months.
Defect
On transit buses, the exhaust system vibration-damping design is inadequate. At specific engine speeds, the exhaust pipe and exhaust pipe brackets resonate and are subjected to excessive force. Continued operation allows cracks to develop in the exhaust pipe and brackets. In the worst case, exhaust gas may leak and noise levels may increase.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, install a vibration-damping damper on the exhaust pipe, replace the exhaust pipe and exhaust pipe brackets with corrected parts, replace the clamps with new units, and add spacers to the clamps. Inspect the clamp brackets and replace any that show cracks with new units.
