Filing in context

The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 49 Mitsubishi notifications from 2008 in this archive. For scale, 3,902 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 6 months.

Defect

The harness of the engine coolant temperature sensor is routed and secured improperly, allowing engine vibration to cause internal wire strand breakage within the insulation. The resulting intermittent signal causes the air heater relay to cycle on and off repeatedly, leading to contact welding and abnormal overheating of the air heater. In the worst case, the air hose may be burned through.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, inspect the coolant temperature sensor harness. If a broken wire is found, replace the harness and air heater relay with new units. Extend the harness and secure it properly using an additional bracket, and install a thermal fuse on the air heater.
