Filing in context

The Drive force transmission unit is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 5 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 86 Mitsubishi notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 3,960 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 2 months.

Defect

In the travel motor reduction gear unit located within the rear wheel, improper support of the drive shaft causes wear of the rotary bush in the clutch hydraulic oil circuit and allows sealing performance to degrade at high temperatures. Continued use under these conditions may allow clutch hydraulic oil to flow into the reduction gear unit during high-speed travel, raising internal pressure and engaging both the low-speed and high-speed clutches simultaneously. This may cause the rear wheels to lock while driving.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the travel motor reduction gear assembly with a corrected part. To prevent internal temperature rise, revise the maximum speed setting, install a temperature sensor on the reduction gear unit, and reprogram the control software to limit travel speed when elevated temperatures are detected. Because the corrected parts require additional procurement time, as an interim measure, notify users of operational precautions related to vehicle use.

Affected models & chassis ranges

This filing lists 2 type code(s). A vehicle is affected if its chassis number falls within one of the ranges below.
