Filing in context
The Computer (Engine Control Unit) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 3 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 8 Toyota notifications from 2008 in this archive. For scale, 2,268 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 months.
Defect
The engine control unit software is incorrectly programmed. During high-speed cruise control operation, a large throttle input — such as that used when passing — causes the control unit to incorrectly detect a throttle fault. This illuminates the engine warning light and may cause the engine to stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control unit.
