Filing in context
The Fuel Tank is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 79 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 8 Toyota notifications from 2008 in this archive. For scale, 56 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 6 months.
Defect
The fuel tank is improperly mounted to the vehicle body. Repeated travel over road surfaces that cause significant body twist concentrates stress near the left rear mounting bolt of the tank, which may cause a crack to develop. Continued use allows the crack to propagate and, in the worst case, may result in a fuel leak.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, remove the left rear fuel tank mounting bolt, install a cushioning material to prevent abnormal noise, and inspect the fuel tank. Any tank found to have a crack is to be replaced with a new unit.
