Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 35 Mazda notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 791 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 3 months.
Defect
The protective tube material used on the engine control wiring harness is improper. When the wiring is routed between the engine cylinder head cover and the air cleaner, heat and chemical compounds from the head cover degrade the tube's strength. Continued use causes the tube to wear through and, in the worst case, damages the wiring, producing a short circuit that causes the engine to stall and prevents restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the wiring harness. (1) If the tube shows no damage, wrap it with a rubber protector and secure it to the cylinder head with a band clip. (2) If only the tube is damaged, perform step (1) and replace the tube with a corrected part. (3) If both the tube and wiring are damaged, perform steps (1) and (2) and repair the wiring.
