Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 35 Mazda notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 3,297 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 17 years.
Defect
On police vehicles, the plastic bands securing the battery cable have insufficient heat resistance. Heat within the engine compartment can cause the bands to break, allowing the battery cable to sag and contact the exhaust manifold heat shield. In the worst case, the cable insulation may melt, causing a short circuit and vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the plastic bands with corrected parts and add metal retaining brackets to secure the battery cable to the body. If the battery cable insulation shows damage, repair it by wrapping the affected area with insulating tape.
